Samsung Subpoenas 2001:A Space Odyssey In Apple Patent Case

Just when you think it couldn't possibly get any more ridiculous, the ongoing patent lawsuits between Apple and the rest of the world have taken a humorous turn.

There is a patent defense known as "prior art". Basically what that means, is if something in say a sci-fi movie today becomes a reality in 30 years, it can't be patented. Apple is suing Samsung because they also make rectangular devices with touchscreens. However, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, there are already rectangular devices with touchscreens that look a lot like tablets. Samsung's defense is that tablets fall under prior art, and cannot be patented.
