Samsung Sales on Track to Derail Nokia and Apple in Q2

Posted 07-25-2011 at 10:50 PM by elmotactics

Analysts predict that for the first time, Samsung could potentially break into the #1 worldwide seller of mobile phones for Q2 2011.

Such strong sales could easily leapfrog Nokia, the current worldwide leader in overall phone sales, which sits at just over 16 million, and could potentially unseat Apple with 20.3 million. Samsung has not yet confirmed these numbers yet, but they could put them into the #2 spot with a 20% global marketshare. While much of this success is attributed to Samsung's strong line of Android phones like the Nexus S and Galaxy SII, they still produce "dumb phones", which are the flip phones of yesteryear that do mainly calling and texting.

Does this mean anything? Not really, but it does put the Galaxy SII, which is set to release this fall in the US, and the fabled Nexus S Prime, which is the Android 4.0-toting monstrosity that will single handedly raise the bar of smartphone performance so high that the iPhone 5, as well as the rest of the smartphones on the planet, will likely be outdated instantly.
